It's one of the largest television audiences every year for a sporting event. But it's also the pinnacle for marketing with some viewers tuning in just to watch the ads. Which is why slots during the Super Bowl can command up to $5m a pop. In our opening event of the year, we look to uncover some of the secrets to those campaigns and look for what lessons can be taken and applied to everyday marketing.

Sarah Kelly

Sarah Kelly

Associate Professor, Marketing & Law, The University of Queensland

Sarah is an Associate Professor in Law and Marketing and the Marketing Discipline Leader at The University of Queensland (UQ) Business School. She recently completed four years in the role of MBA Director at the Business School, in which she led the program to a ranking of number 1 in Australia and 10th globally. 

She has interdisciplinary expertise in marketing, psychology and law and is globally known for her research and consulting in the sports field. Sarah is also leading a global sports innovation accelerator at UQ in partnership with Advance Qld and Hype Sports. She is a director and founder of the Global Esports Institute, concerned with education, welfare and strategy for the positive growth of the esports community. 

Sarah holds a PhD, MBA and Bachelors of Law and Commerce and has practiced previously as a commercial lawyer and manager. She holds several non-executive directorships, including as Deputy Chair of the Brisbane Lions AFL Football Club, Tourism and Events Qld, The Gregory Terrace Foundation and the Wandering Warriors. She is also a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors National Education Advisory Board, the Qld Symphony Orchestra Marketing Advisory Board and the State Minister’s Sport Advisory Council.

Luke Wheatley

Head of Creative and Content, Flight Centre

A passionate creative marketer, Luke has worked in various marketing roles across the FMCG range category including natural health, entertainment, food and now travel. Majoring in Marketing and Law, Luke has used his skills across multiple roles where he currently leads the brand strategy for one of the largest travel companies in the world, Flight Centre.

Recent work has had him launch the new brand direction and created their first ever travel series 'The 48 Hour Destination' on network 10. He is currently working on his two new project, The second season of The 48 Hour Destination and a new series using SEO data and highlighting our consultants in 'The Expert Series'.

Rob is the Managing Director of the highly awarded Clemenger Brisbane. For over two decades he has delivered communication strategy with a passion for blending creativity and technology to drive business transformation. He has won over 35 international awards including seven Cannes Lions and a coveted White D&AD pencil. 

Rob is a founding board member of the Brisbane Portraiture Prize and Artisan; a Multicultural Ambassador for Queensland Government; guest lecturer at QUT and Award School; an ADschool tutor; an advisory board member of Interactive minds and the Digital Summit; a founding mentor of the Circle; a member of the CEO Institute; an IPA Certified Strategist and the originator of the HeART project. 

He is currently learning Salesforce integration and woodturning.

Panel Facilitator: Liam Fitzpatrick

Founder & Head of Communications, Commswork

Liam has over a decade of experience in media and tech comms across North American/European/APAC markets. He's founder of Commswork, a consultancy helping business leaders refine their voice in industries plagued with jargon. He also operates as head of communications for retail blockchain platform Beam, where he leads a global team revolutionising the retail economy. Liam is also host of Cut the Cliches podcast, which explains the buzzwords in business and technology.

Graduating from City University with a BA in Journalism and Psychology, he now helps translate what businesses want to say into something their audience want to hear. Working with The Walt Disney Company for a number of years in London, he helped craft its narrative around brand partnerships. He has offered counsel to clients including Google, Microsoft, Havas, iProspect and TBWA.

As head of ANZ comms at Freelancer.com in Sydney, he worked together with the chief exec to develop corporate strategy and coordinate with product heads. The communications campaign for StartCon, Australia's largest startup conference, helped sell out the 3,500 person event.
