John Powell

His time in the ICT sector has spanned more than 30 years working at both technical and leadership levels across compute, storage, network and security domains.

In recent years, John has been using this breadth and depth of Information Systems experience to provide security and business consulting services to Telstra Purple customers.  He is currently the Security Principal for Telstra Purple in Queensland and oversees the development and delivery of security services in this region while also contributing across other regions.  John is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a director of CREST ANZ and the Australian National Cyber Institute, and a founding member of the Active Cyber Defence Alliance.  His vision is to apply cybersecurity risk and technical innovation expertise in boardrooms as both a director and an advisor.

Matt Butts

Matt Butts

Principal Security Consultant, Equate Technologies

Matt is an experienced information security advocate, passionate about technology and how it shapes our world.

From the trenches of security operations and incident response to designing and building solutions to protect critical assets, Matt's 20-year professional career in Cybersecurity was borne from a childhood passion of electronic and computer experimentation, a desire to understand how things work, and make them do things they were never designed for. The epitome of a hacker - someone who uses their technical skills to solve difficult problems.

Those problems can be a matter of perspective. For example, how to protect a water supply from cyber-attack, keep commuters on time or prevent identity fraud. Or it could be how to extort people for money or influence the outcome of an election. Cybersecurity is no different from protecting yourself and your assets before the Internet existed. An arms race, where allies and adversaries are under a constant battle to defend their valuable assets and break or bypass those defences. Adversaries are often experienced and well-funded, leaving the public vulnerable. How we participate in the electronic information age plays a huge role in how it affects us, our businesses, and our families.

Offering extensive experience in information security technology and governance, Matt is also a Principal Security Consultant at Equate Technologies; leading the technical design of infosec-centric projects, operating as client-technical interface and key advisor.
